LOCATION
Once you've settled in, you'll quickly learn why National Geographic
lists Santa Cruz among America's Top 40 beach destinations. Main
Beach is directly across the street, inviting you to swim in the
gentle surf, walk along the shore, play volleyball on a sand court
or simply lounge in the sun. If surfing is on your agenda, walk
up the street to Cowell Beach for beginner waves, or venture around
the point to legendary Steamer Lane. For family fun, take a stroll
to the Beach Boardwalk amusement park, Santa Cruz Wharf, and miles
of cliffside walking paths along West Cliff Drive. Or explore
historic downtown Santa Cruz, with its eclectic mix of restaurants,
shops and theatres.

The Breakers was originally The Breakers Hotel, opened in 1912. Tourists from San Francisco would ride the "Suntan Special" train and disembark at the hotel for beachfront lodging and fine seafood served in the hotel restaurant. Tourists would visit Downtown Santa Cruz, which looked a lot different in the early 1900s, before several earthquakes changed the face of storefronts and facades. At that time, Santa Cruz had two wharfs -- one for freight transfer from trains to ships, and one with shops and restaurants.
After years of decline, The Breakers Hotel was bought and restored by a local builder who retained the old-fashioned craftsmanship and classic details of the original building. The renovation also included modern touches such as new floors, granite kitchens and baths, and original work by local artists. The Breakers is now a family-owned business with a simple mission: to provide value, quality and personal service at the highest level.
